Case Study: Recruitment Regions

Recruitment Regions
A New York college admissions office contacted MVGIS to create a series of large, wall hanging maps to facilitate small group discussion and planning activities among staff.

One map in particular was to be extremely data rich. All public, private and charter schools needed to be displayed along with all colleges and universities within 24 counties of New York state. The names of all institutions needed to be included also. Additionally, towns and counties needed to be labeled and major highways shown.

The biggest challenge for a mapping project of this nature is readability. It became apparent early on that inset maps would be needed for congested areas. Happily, only three insets were required, which easily fit down the side. A fourth inset was created for Dutchess County, the only requested county not contiguous with the other 23 counties. This nicely balanced the layout.

It was impossible to label all schools and higher ed institutions on the map. An acceptable solution was to place a numbered bubble for each institution on the map, then list all institutions numerically below the map.

Finally, public, private and charter schools were differentiated by color. A triangle symbol was chosen to maximize the labeled display area next to each symbol.
