Otsego Snowmobile Trail Map

New York State has more than 10,500 miles of snowmobile trails for winter enthusiasts to enjoy. The sport is an important winter economic catalyst contributing a sizable chunk of tourism revenue and supporting thousands of jobs throughout the upstate community.

Accurate, up to date maps are needed to show trail locations and places where riders can stop for gas, a bite to eat or to spend the night.

The biggest challenge with a countywide map is the sheer volume of information that needs to be shown. Trails need to be color-coded with IDs, all local roads need to be displayed and named, businesses all need to be located and categorized.

The biggest hurdle with this particular map was obtaining correct E-911 street addresses for all the local businesses and having complete address ranges for all rural road segments. A handful of businesses and fire stations had to be found to determine their correct locations.

Beyond that, the layout process is a manual labor effort as is cleaning up overlapping road names, highway shields and snowmobile trail IDs. Inset maps are typically used for village centers for clarity.

Happy trails!
