GIS for Town Supervisors and Mayors, Boards, Water/Sewer District and Highway Superintendents, Assessors, Public Safety and Codes Departments
| Whether you are the town supervisor, historical society director or public works manager, having access to your community's data within a GIS can make doing your job much easier. For example, a GIS can: |
| * realign zoning districts |
| * help prioritize road maintenance projects |
| * provide visual aids for board and department meetings |
| * generate abutters lists at the push of a button |
| * monitor the health of your community’s watershed |
| * present well-documented alternatives when choosing parcels for open space preservation |
| * create maps for town or village strategic plans |
| * maintain and display crime data to determine “hot spots” and develop deterrents |
A well-designed and maintained GIS will offer any municipal worker, board member or community volunteer ready access to valuable data and an effective tool to clearly communicate information internally and to the general public. |
Software Support and GIS Training |
Mohawk Valley GIS supports both ESRI ArcMap and Manifold Systems GIS software. Needs assessments are used to determine the most cost effective and appropriate implementation strategy for a given community. This could be one or more desktop copies of GIS, an internet based viewer or a combination. Implementation can be phased in over a few years, as needed. To date, all communities working with MVGIS have funded their GIS work from budget allocations and have not had to seek grant funding. Most implementations typically take three years to complete. All GIS training is customized to each community's needs. Training is usually one-on-one or provided for two people together, depending on department requirements. Group training is provided for an internet based viewer implementation. Customized user manuals are also provided. |
